GPS has become so popular that many people begin to think that GPS exists in their mobile phones, rather than in the tracks on their heads. However, these loyal machines are still fulfilling their mission to serve mankind. Today, the prototype of the third generation GPS satellite has been tested in Lockheed Martin's laboratory in Colorado.
The third generation GPS system is called GPSBlokcIII. Its R&D and upgrading costs are up to 5.5 billion US dollars. It is still under the control of the US Air Force Space Command, which is headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.
A big problem with GPS today is signals: you can't search for GPS signals under trees, indoors or in other sheltered places. The new generation of GPSBlockIII satellite (it is said that it was originally developed only to prevent interference) has greatly enhanced the signal, so that you can also find and receive the signal in today's blind spots. At the same time, the positioning of the new GPS will be more accurate, from the current 6 meters (20 feet) to 0.6 meters (2 feet). At that time, your GPS can not only tell you what road you are on, but also tell you which part of the road you are on, such as in a non motorized lane or a motorized lane.
Due to the limitations left by the original design, the current GPS satellite has failed to completely separate the military and civilian channels. For a long time, the civilian frequency band (C/A code) of GPS is the military frequency band (P code) plus some additional interference signals. On the new generation of GPSIII satellites, this situation has been completely improved - the civil frequency band and the military frequency band have been separated, and the special L1C civil code signal frequency band has been added.
Other cool things about GPSIII are that the United States has reached an agreement with the European Union on L1C civil code signal frequency band, so that new generation GPS chips can receive signals from different global positioning systems, such as the Galileo navigation system in Europe, the GLONASS navigation system in Russia, and even the Beidou navigation system in China. The GPSIII specification also allows one receiver to use data located by multiple systems, thereby improving accuracy.
