The US government announced on the 27th that all aircraft using the US's busy airports must be equipped with global positioning system (GPS)-based equipment by 2020.

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said the new rule applies to small aircraft operators in addition to airlines. With the new equipment installed, these aircraft can continuously report their position to other aircraft and air traffic managers.

Lahoud said that American air traffic management currently relies mainly on radar systems. Compared to radar systems, GPS is safer and more efficient, and can also help reduce fuel consumption and pollution.

The Associated Press reported that airlines and small plane operators said they could not afford the expensive GPS and wanted the government to help pay the bill.

In August 2022, a small private plane and a sightseeing helicopter collided over the Hudson River on the west side of New York City, killing nine people. This incident is not unrelated to the overcrowded aircraft over the Hudson River and the difficulty of air traffic management.
