GPS is the abbreviation for Global Positioning System in English. GPS began
as a project by the US military in 1958
GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) is the abbreviation of General Packet
Radio Service technology. It is a mobile data service available to GSM mobile
phone users and belongs to the data transmission technology in the second
generation of mobile communication.
The transmission of location information from a moving vehicle to the
center must rely on a wireless transmission system. Currently, the GSM system
has the widest coverage, so most vehicle positioning terminals in the market use
GSM communication modules as the carrier for data transmission, utilizing the
short message function provided by GSM to transmit the vehicle's location data
to the control center. However, in practical use, it has been found that there
are two main drawbacks to using short messages to transmit data:
(1) Slow transmission speed. In general, directly connecting to the short
message center by extending the short message entity can improve the speed of
short message transmission. The actual test results show that it takes 3-5
seconds for the vehicle's position information to be sent from the onboard
device to the center normally, which cannot be achieved even when the short
message center is busy. Compared to vehicles with a normal speed of 60-80 km/h,
the actual error of the data received by the center may reach 80-120 meters.
(2) High transmission costs. The fee for short messages is charged based on
the number of messages sent, usually 0.1 yuan per message. For large business
volumes, there may be appropriate discounts, but even so, the fee cannot meet
the needs of monitoring vehicles at any time in practical applications.
For general unit vehicles using GPS systems for vehicle management, the
above two drawbacks may not have a significant impact. However, for important
vehicles such as bank cash carriers and police patrol vehicles, accurate
location information is required at critical moments to accurately locate the
vehicle and take necessary measures. Using GPRS to transmit data does not have
these drawbacks. Once the GPRS communication module is connected, it will always
be online, and the data transmission speed when online is less than 1 second.
This means that the location information of the vehicle can be displayed on the
electronic map within 1 second after being sent. Moreover, GPRS generally adopts
a monthly subscription or billing based on traffic, and the cost of data
transmission is much lower than that of SMS.
