1. The area to be entered should be fully investigated in advance. Now, the network is so developed that the existing electronic vector maps and satellite photos can be used to study the target area. The former recommends Electronic Map of China (I have seen the most accurate vector map of the country!), and the latter of course is Google Earth. Again, it's good to see the world as God from the sky. What do we research on the map? The first is to mark the coordinates of POI (Points of Interest) around the target area, such as the nearest residential area, gas station, township, village and even the turning point and intersection of the highway around a desert or forest and other uninhabited areas. The second is to browse the target area through the satellite map and look for signs with significant characteristics. For example, a hill in the desert, a small lake in the Gobi or an open space in the forest. All these, of course, are the more the better, the more evenly distributed the better. Because once there is a problem, you can choose the nearest point.

　　2. Data preparation. All these POIs should be marked on screen shots of different scales, printed out (preferably satellite photos and vector maps), and bound into volumes. At the same time, an index page should be established to list the names and descriptions of all POIs. The next thing to do is to input these POIs into GPS according to the defined names and save them as waypoints. I suggest that the names of waypoints should not start with numbers to avoid confusion with temporary waypoints.

　　3. Power supply preparation. All electronic equipment needs electric energy. If you don't have solar panel charger or hand generator and other power generation equipment, you'd better prepare several AA or AAA batteries in advance, which is also the most economical way. This is why I always recommend selecting GPS receivers with AA or AAA batteries. Because this kind of battery can be bought in any small place and any small shop. Even if you enter a no man's land, if you use each pair of batteries for 10-14 hours continuously, you can still work with the GPS receiver after eating all the food with 20 batteries. Those devices that use rechargeable batteries are quite troublesome at this time. Although the capacity is very large, charging will be a big problem after more than 10 hours. Without electricity, life can sometimes be endangered.

　　4. Don't forget the traditional map. Many people think that with GPS, traditional maps can be discarded. This is by no means the case. First of all, the current GPS built-in maps are quite rough and incompatible. And they are mainly aimed at cities. Remember, you can't die if you get lost in the city. GPS electronic maps, especially for the fields without roads, are a vast expanse of white. In addition, it is almost impossible to find GPS specific electronic details for a specific area (such as 200 kilometers around the Hoh Xil Protection Station). Therefore, traditional paper maps, especially large scale and contour maps with longitude and latitude, are very important. Finally, don't forget to bring a triangle plate with protractor, a pencil or a compass. (Usage will be explained later)

　　5. Finally, you are on your way. On the way, you travel alone, looking forward to your destination and enjoying the beautiful desert scenery along the way. At this time, don't forget to define a waypoint on the GPS receiver every time you pass a marker point - this is a temporary waypoint. They may be an abandoned house, a lonely tree in the desert or a turning point of all the roads passing by. These waypoints are named with numbers and stored in order. Don't forget to take out your notebook (not your computer) and write down relevant names and descriptions, such as Waypoint 005: Bridge on a small river about 15 minutes north of Luanshi Mountain. So when you're looking for a return trip, it's pretty simple.
